Job Description

The Biomass Lab team: Our client has more than 25 years' experience in bio-energy activities with strong expertise biomass certification since 2004. Today, he is contributing to the bio-based economy by providing technical and regulatory expertise on the requirements for biomass trading, which is necessary to serve clients within and outside the group in the whole world. Regulatory compliance for sustainable supply chains is highly depending on greenhouse gas emissions calculations of the supply chains (life cycle assessment competences) which is crucial for the development of sustainable bio-based value chains. The Biomass and Green Fuels team is working on biomass combustion plants as well as innovative green fuels projects, the lab analysis of solid biomass fuels, biomass and green fuels handling, thermal pretreatment of biomass, safety ATEX issues in bioenergy plants and the production of green fuels, sustainability, regulatory compliance and certification of biomass and green fuels activities, doing research activities, developing global solutions and managing projects for customers worldwide. Biomass and Green fuels regulatory compliance and certification: For our activities on biomass and green fuels certification, we seek a collaborator who should develop expertise in regulatory issues for biomass and green fuels as well as skills in the certification process of biomass supply chains of the sake of the regulations within the European Union. Those regulations are as follows. - The Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2023/2413, the cornerstone for the recognition of renewable energy production in Europe, setting sustainability criteria for bioenergy supply chain. - The EU ETS Directive (EU) 2018/410 amending Directive 2003/87/EC to enhance cost-effective emission reductions and low-carbon investments. The revised EU ETS Directive entered into force on 8 April 2018 and sets the framework for the fourth trading period from 2021 to 2030. - The Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products (EUDR) aiming to bring down greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. - The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a climate regulation designed to price carbon emissions embedded in energy-intensive goods imported into the EU. Starting in 2026, importers must purchase certificates to cover emissions, preventing "carbon leakage" and ensuring fair competition with cleaner EU production. A transitional phase applies from 2023 to 2025. - The Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation (EU/2024/3012). establishing the first EU-wide voluntary certification framework for permanent carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products Our External support search: Our client is looking for a collaborator to support the Biomass and Green Fuels team activities regarding the follow-up of the legislation regarding biomass and green fuels supply chains as well as the organisation of the certification process for biomass trading and end-use. These tasks consist of: 1. following up the various updates and new publications around the main regulatory texts and communicating them internally and to the various clients of the team; 2. support the certification process of biomass and green fuels supply chains from the point of view of their traceability, sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain; 3. organise training and internal audits for our clients on the certification processes related to their use of schemes like SBP, ISCC-EU, FSC, PEFC as well as accompany their audits with external auditors for that sake; 4. compute GHG emissions calculations using the existing tool for the sake of audit preparations as well as prospective new trades, and help improving the calculator.

Required qualifications

- Typical diploma: master (bio-)engineering, with good knowledge of bio-processes, - Alternatively, master of laws, with a special interest in European legislation and an affinity with technical fields; - Oral and written fluency in French and English. Dutch is a plus - Mastery of Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), - Wanting to understand the world of renewable energy and participate in the energy transition. - Wanting to contribute critically and responsibly to the implementation of processes and solutions for the sustainable management of society and the environment.
