We are currently seeking to fill the position of Avionics and Mission Systems Project Manager for the development of a new series of Military UAV projects. This is a permanent role with our client, a leading innovator in the aerospace and defense industry, specializing in cutting-edge Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies.
Job Description
The Avionics and Mission Systems Project Manager is responsible for leading the end-to-end delivery of avionics and mission systems projects within Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms. This role ensures that all projects related to flight electronics, sensors, mission payloads, data processing, and command & control (C2) systems are completed on time, within scope and budget, and meet the highest standards for performance, safety, and compliance. The position bridges technical program management with cross-functional engineering leadership to deliver mission-critical capabilities in the aerospace defense domain.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution
- Define and manage project plans, budgets, schedules, and deliverables for avionics and mission systems from concept to deployment.
- Lead the planning, execution, and monitoring of integrated product development activities in coordination with system, software, electrical, and test teams.
- Ensure project milestones align with program requirements, risk assessments, and technical objectives.
Technical Oversight & Integration
- Oversee integration of flight control computers, autopilot systems, inertial navigation systems (INS/GPS), communication systems, and mission payloads (e.g., EO/IR sensors, SIGINT, EW modules).
- Support the development of interface control documents (ICDs), architecture definitions, and test plans for avionics and payload subsystems.
- Monitor compliance with DO-178C, DO-254, MIL-STDs, STANAGs, and internal airworthiness/cybersecurity standards.
Stakeholder & Team Coordination
- Coordinate with internal engineering disciplines, procurement, manufacturing, quality assurance, and logistics teams.
- Act as the primary interface between the company and external stakeholders, including end-users, military partners, certification bodies, and subcontractors.
- Lead technical and programmatic reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, QR) and ensure proper documentation and traceability across the development lifecycle.
Vendor and Supply Chain Management
- Manage technical and contractual performance of vendors and third-party suppliers of avionics and mission systems hardware/software.
- Evaluate supplier proposals, ensure alignment with project technical requirements, and monitor supplier integration and verification activities.
Quality, Compliance & Risk Management
- Enforce adherence to aerospace quality and safety standards (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, NADCAP).
- Identify and mitigate technical, schedule, and cost risks through proactive project governance and escalation.
- Maintain project documentation including project plans, risk registers, status reports, compliance checklists, and lessons learned.
Required qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Background
- Bachelor's Degree in Avionics Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline (REQUIRED)
- Master's Degree in Systems Engineering, Project Management, or a related technical field (PREFERRED)
Professional Experience
- Minimum 15 years of experience in aerospace/defense engineering, with at least 8 years in project or program management roles.
- Demonstrated experience with UAV avionics integration, C2 systems, and mission payloads (EO/IR, radar, EW, SIGINT, etc.).
- Familiarity with defense program lifecycle, integrated product development, and technology readiness evaluations.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in managing complex avionics architectures, including embedded systems, real-time communications, and sensor integration.
- Solid understanding of airborne system interfaces, data buses (ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, CAN), and hardware/software co-design.
- Familiar with DO-178C, DO-254, STANAGs, and avionics certification frameworks.
- Experienced in requirements management (DOORS, Polarion), and project planning tools (MS Project, Primavera, Jira).
- Awareness of cybersecurity in avionics systems and airworthiness considerations in military UAVs.
