Job Description
We are currently seeking to fill the position of Subject Matter Expert – Actuation Systems to serve as the technical authority for all aspects of actuation systems within UAV platforms, including flight control, landing gear, payload, and subsystem actuators. The SME will lead the design, integration, and validation of electromechanical and hydraulic actuation solutions, ensuring compliance with performance, reliability, and regulatory standards. This role is key to driving innovation, ensuring safety, and achieving mission effectiveness across the company's autonomous systems portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Define and maintain the actuation systems architecture across UAV platforms, including primary and secondary control surface actuators, landing gear actuators, weapon release mechanisms, and payload positioning systems.
- Provide strategic direction for actuation technology development, including the adoption of smart actuators, redundant systems, and power-optimized configurations.
- Serve as design authority for actuator components and systems, reviewing and approving technical documents, drawings, and engineering reports.
Systems Engineering & Requirements Management
- Lead the development of system-level requirements, interface definitions, and performance specifications for actuation systems.
- Ensure traceability and verification planning through the system development lifecycle using tools such as DOORS or similar.
- Oversee actuator integration with electrical power systems, flight control computers, airframe structures, and software interfaces.
Analysis, Testing & Verification
- Guide modeling and simulation efforts for actuator performance (torque, speed, load capacity, response time) and failure modes (jam, loss of power, sensor failure).
- Plan and supervise system-level validation including environmental testing, functional tests, lifecycle endurance, and EMC/EMI compliance.
- Support root cause investigations, FMEA sessions, and corrective action planning for actuation anomalies.
Innovation & Industry Alignment
- Evaluate and introduce advanced actuation technologies, including brushless DC motors, servo actuators, hydraulic/electromechanical hybrids, and smart sensor-integrated actuators.
- Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes relevant to actuation systems and incorporate them into internal design guidelines.
- Collaborate with R&D and innovation teams to enhance performance, reduce weight, and improve reliability.
Mentoring & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Mentor engineers in actuator design, integration, and analysis.
- Coordinate with software, systems, avionics, and mechanical teams to ensure seamless actuator performance in platform-level simulations and missions.
- Engage with suppliers and OEMs for component development, qualification, and integration readiness.
